There are a lot of barriers for students when it comes to math. Some students have missing skills that hold them back. Some students need to be able to create models to understand the patterns and connections between numbers and the real world. And some students need physical modifications to the classroom setting in order to concentrate. Many students have trouble sitting still in 7th and 8th grade. Their physical discomfort hinders their ability to focus on learning. I worked hard for 12 to modify the curriculum in many ways to connect with the students who struggle with math: using tiles, games, teams, and strategies to build confidence and understanding. The one area I have not been able to help my students is by allowing those who need it a way to learn standing up. I have bought books and equipment for my classroom but new standing desks are beyond my budget and not something the district is willing to provide. A sit/stand desk is the perfect solution for those who cannot sit for a whole class period, allowing my students to stand, stretch, and wiggle while still taking notes and doing problems. The desk can also shrink back down to a seated height so they will still be able to work with their team to ask questions and share ideas. I teach five periods a day: four desks will allow 20 students each school year a choice of position that will make a big difference in their ability to learn. Thank you!
