My students range in age from 5 to 11, grades Pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade. I teach in an inner city school in Oklahoma and, like most schools in our district, we sit below the poverty level. My students are vibrant and excited about learning. They love to come to music and sit on the pretty rug and talk about all of the music vocabulary and symbols that we are currently learning. The younger students get so excited when they recognize one of the music symbols that we just talked about.
In making the transfer from the board to the rug to the book, and then to paper and pencil, I can make the music come alive for them and give it relevance in their lives and the knowledge they are gaining becomes more concrete in their minds and they are more capable of taking that knowledge and mastering the concepts presented to them in their music lessons. I love being able to give the gift of music to so many kids
