My students are extremely eager and intelligent beings, who happen to live in one of the most dangerous cities found in the United States. Our school resides in a part of Oakland, CA that is commonly referred to as the "deep east" or more notably, the "killing fields." Despite these extreme external factors, a majority of my students make coming to school a priority. They do not focus on what we lack but instead embrace what little we do have, acknowledging that they too are lucky to be receiving a free education. As their instructor, I aim to ignite scientific curiosity and self-advocacy. In order to achieve this type of perspective, my students must feel that they are empowered as well as deserving of such powerful mindsets. Uplifting and engaging resources are pivotal when considering how to frame the importance of scientific inquiry. :)
