5th grade math is taught in 5 class rotations of 25 students. Each class has students of varying abilities and learning preferences. We use a workshop format in an effort to access and engage all students throughout the 50 minute class period, in which students rotate through work stations to access the content in different ways. Classroom management has the biggest impact in the success of workshop. With these color changing lamps, students working in small groups can communicate their needs for teacher guidance by tapping on the lamp to change the color. For example; green = working well, yellow = not stuck but could use support, red = at a standstill, need guidance to move forward, etc... The wireless doorbell is a classroom management tool that can be used from anywhere in the room to gather the students' attention, whether it be to bring noise-levels down or to signal a workshop station rotation.
