84% of our students qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch. Also, 51% of students receive English Language services. We have many students in 1st grade that come from different countries, and this is their first ever experience in a classroom. They are eager to learn and it is very exciting to watch them grow. In 1st grade, reading is very important to all students. Last year many students grew over nine reading levels! But this is not the case for all students. One difficulty I noticed during my first year was independent reading time for struggling readers. During guided reading time, the teachers have small groups of students who work on phonics, reading and writing with a teacher. The rest of the students are independently reading at their desks or working on various reading/word work activities. For struggling readers, I want to implement a station (iPad), where students could work on phonics actives, reading applications and listen to audio books on an iPad.
