PAAL students face multiple challenges in their personal and academic lives that often impede their success. Currently, our student body consists of a 98.5% pan-ethnic minority population with 82% receiving free or reduced rate lunch. There are numerous factors that contribute to the adversity our students experience. Every year, we have students who are: survivors of community violence, parenting, homeless, chronically ill, self-supporting, lacking family support, involved with the juvenile justice system, currently on probation, returning from Community Day Schools, Camps, continuation schools, and independent studies programs. Many students arrive at PAAL feeling academically defeated with questionable hope for their futures. We understand the gravity of our role as an intervention campus and are obliged to create an environment that empowers students academically, embeds social-emotional support and promotes student engagement via advocacy and leadership opportunities.
