Years ago, I worked at a pre-k and we got some baby dolls that were multicultural. I didn’t think much of it until one little girl, who was from China, stopped dead in her tracks, pointed to the Asian baby doll and shouted, “Look! it’s me! That doll looks like me!” I hadn’t realized until then how important it was to children to see themselves represented in their classroom environments. Since then, I have always tried to have my classrooms full of materials that alllow every child to exclaim, “Look! It’s me!” Having crayons and pencils in so many skin tones encourages them to express themselves and to feel valued. There is no “skin color” crayon—there are dozens of them!
