My class is one of three second grade classes at a K-8 public charter school in Oakland. Our school's mission is to prepare all students to earn a degree from a four-year college. Each of the classrooms in our school is named after a college or a university and even our youngest students talk animatedly about getting ready for college. Our families are very involved in their children's education and last year two parents helped in my classroom every morning to check students' homework. Our families, staff, and students have a strong sense of pride in our school and some of our teachers and administrators have known the current eighth graders since they were in Kindergarten. All of the teachers, administrators, and school staff have a strong sense of shared responsibility and commitment to our scholars and their families.
