My school is located on the south side of Chicago. Many of my second grade scholars are living at or below the poverty line. My scholars often don't have a lot of access to books outside of our classroom but that doesn't mean they don't love to read! They love to read books about science, technology, fantasy, history, real life and much more. My scholars are empowered when they are able to choose books that not only interest them, but that challenge them; books that push my scholars to become better readers without overwhelming or frustrating them. They need books that they can choose based on their own individual learning level and goals. My scholars are Readers and Thinkers that have a hunger for books. As they prepare to go on to the third grade, it's important that they empower themselves by choosing books they want to read, by thinking and talking about books with other students, and using those books as a catalyst to their learning growth.

About my class
