Many of my students desire to be challenged throughout the school day. They tend to rush through work with the goal of getting it finished, not understanding the processes actually at work. They can easily become disengaged because of this, and even though they like challenges, they are hesitant to show and explain all of their thinking, especially during math. Using whiteboards during math time encourage peer-to-peer mathematical discourse. About half of my students come from low-income families who struggle to get the supplies they need for school. While my school does have a budget for supplies, extra things like personal whiteboards are not common. Extra tools brought into the classroom excites my students and sparks their interest in education.
