Middle School can be hard for kids. Many of my students are trying to find out who they are and where they fit in our school culture. Social media and video games don’t help. Kids are not great at making new friends and forming real relationships. They need help thinking ahead, not just for the present moment. They need opportunities to work together for a common goal. Reasoning, strategy, and cooperation are skills that are necessary in the real world. By meeting in an after school club, students will have the opportunity to learn these skills, while building relationships that don’t include social media or screens...actually talking with one another! The games I am requesting are chosen for specific reasons. Uno, chess, Exploding Kittens, and Werewolf teach strategy. Castle Panic, Codenames, and Forbidden Island are great for collaborative play, helping to teach cooperation to win as a team. Bananagrams and Scoring games reinforce math and language skills. By using these games for our gaming club, I hope to give my students a safe place to grow and learn.
