My students are intelligent, curious people on the brink of great discoveries about themselves and the world; they are 14 years old and everything is becoming, simultaneously, more clear and more confusing to them. These students hurtle into my 9th grade Humanities classroom every September, new to high school and new to my school, and they are full of Big Questions: Who am I? What is important to me? What is my job in the world? Is it actually possible for me to "make a difference"? Over the course of the year, we read great books that open doors into history and help us attempt to answer some of these questions together. Doing this work is no small feat. My students are diverse learners. Their reading levels range from a 4th grade level to college level. Several are English Language Learners. At least half require extra reading support. Many don't consider themselves "readers."
