My students inspire me everyday. Throughout their whole day they persevere through not only the rigor of the school curriculum but also struggles of growing up in a high-poverty neighborhood. For some of my students this is their only time where they are able to express themselves creatively. Some are so motivated to do so that all I need to do is hand them a piano and stay out of their way. They have between 50 and 54 minutes (depending on the class) to create music before they return to their routine. It is my responsibility as their teacher to offer as many opportunities to do this whether it be through pianos or playing rhythm exercises on paint buckets. These students deserve the chance to play on pianos that have all the keys, with the proper wiring, and produce the correct note when a key is played.
