I educate middle schools students in a large urban school district. My students come from diverse backgrounds. We are located in a high poverty area and have been labeled a “trauma” school. Additionally, all my students are eligible for free lunch, which is another indicator of the deep poverty of the area. Despite their poverty, my students are passionate about learning and eager to meet the academic rigor set forth by the school district. Many of my students come to school on a daily basis without the required materials. As a school community, many teachers including myself often spend a portion of our salary to purchase needed materials for our students and classroom. I am mindful that by investing in my students now will yield the reward later.
