The students in my school are insightful and hard-working young adults. Like all kids their age, they are just starting to cross over into the world of adulthood. They are still kids, but their bodies and minds are beginning to prepare for adulthood. On top of this challenge, they also live in a low income neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Most of their parents are working minimum wage jobs and long hours. They have responsibilities and worries that many people could never imagine having at 11 or 12 years old. I know that my students are kind and empathetic people, however, maintaining and nurturing these characteristics can be difficult on your own. We don't expect our kids to understand how to divide fractions or read novels without providing them with the instruction and tools to do so. So, why do we expect them to know how to walk in the shoes of someone else or to navigate a disagreement without providing them with the guidance and tools to do so?
