Currently, I have five students. We are the only classroom at my site that services students with such intensive needs. My students love school and enjoy spending time visiting our sensory room and working in small groups or independently. If you were to visit our classroom, you would see students working hard on a variety of skills that are individualized and developmentally appropriate. My students prefer tasks that embed technology and/or are hands-on/manipulative-heavy. Our day is very structured and my students respond very well to routine tasks that are familiar. We spend a lot of time daily trying to build expressive and receptive language skills in order to help my students learn to communicate their wants and needs effectively and efficiently. We try to facilitate social interactions with adults and peers by modeling and providing opportunities for structured practice.
