Since the Covic-19 pandemic, I've noticed an increase in student anxiety and stress. In second graders, this often translates into off task behavior, fidgeting and loss of focus. Needless to say, I have a classroom full of what I like to call 'Wiggle Bugs'; students unable to focus and full of pent up negative emotional energy. The Bouncy Band website touts the bands as "an active learning tool which enables greater focus and concentration. Two patented tubes quickly attach to school chair or desk legs and a thick tension band stretches between making a discreet footrest." The research related to products like Bouncy Bands is promising because it satisfies student's need to move, without leaving their seat, making noise, or distracting their neighbors. They are also discreet enough that students can use them without their peers becoming aware. According to a 2017 Education Week article, Jennifer Bisson, a psychology lecturer, is quoted as saying, "When they’re used as a tool, students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, anxiety, or other conditions can relieve tension and focus better." My hope is that with the use of these Bouncy Bands, the anxiety and stress level in my students will decrease. This should exponentially increase their productivity and ability to learn by allowing them to self regulate their negative emotions.
