Most students I work with have executive functioning difficulties or self-regulation needs. For my project, I'm requesting children's books that illustrate and explore difficult emotions like anger, accepting no, and sadness, and also books that address common executive function problems like organization, problem solving, and following directions. Using children's books to teach these skills helps children better understand themselves, others, and the world around them. When children can connect to the characters in the stories, I can foster deeper discussions about when they experience these emotions or struggles and discuss ways to address them. Students who have trouble regulating their own emotions and behaviors are not always ready to learn what's being presented in their classrooms. I want to help them feel ready to be successful students and take on new challenges at school.
