These days, everything is digital. Our middle school recently contracted with OverDrive to bring a collection of popular ebooks and audiobooks to our students. Students can download books and read or listen to them on their personal devices. Teachers are also putting more and more classwork online using tools like Google Classroom. Many students cannot access digital content because they do not have a personal device they can use in class. Our project will provide a Kindle Fire tablet to 10 students who cannot afford a personal device. Students will keep the device for an entire semester for use in the classroom and at home. After that time, the devices may continue with the student or may be assigned to another student with a need for the next semester. In many schools, the most at-risk students have the least access to personal technology. As more and more schoolwork becomes digital, these students are at a greater disadvantage. Through this project, students will not only have access to ebooks and audiobooks to improve their reading, but will have a connected device that will help them with their classwork, both in and out of school.
