My school is a Title 1 school which serves children from varied socio-economic backgrounds. My classroom is a kindergarten dual language bilingual classroom, and my students are amazing! Our classroom is a reflection of the world we live in, with some students having very limited English and no English in their homes, while other classmates have only English. They know no language barriers, and connect with each other in spite of differences. Many do not have books at home, and their parents are also struggling to learn English, so parents cannot help at home. That makes our work in the classroom more vital than ever. All of my kids love books, and they need a large variety of books and words to help them build both language and reading fluency. Books in TWO languages is the key to bridging the literacy gap for all of my children so that they can become successful, biliterate citizens of our world.
