These robots can be operated using four different applications. Go and Path provide students the ability to transfer their gaming knowledge to the manipulation of the Dash robot via a virtual controller or by drawing a path on a screen for Dash to travel in the real world. These apps also allow the students to explore the various capabilities of the Dash robot to make sounds, speak, change the colors and patterns of its light displays, and to move. Students can then transition to Wonder that provides the opportunity to have the Dash and Dot robot interact in a sequential or a repetitive series of actions. As students develop more precise skills and understanding of the devices, then they can begin to create ever more complex interactions between the two robots and their accessories by assembling blocks of pre-written code. My students will be able to then act as peer advisers for students in younger grades that will be invited to also learn and use the Dash and Dot robots in order to develop their understanding of basic coding and computer science. These Dash and Dot robots will provide an entry point into basic computer science; spatial, sequential, logical, and other higher level thinking processes; and opportunities for students to communicate and collaborate with others as they work together to construct instructions and assemble lines of code (using Blocky) to achieve the desired robotic actions and interactions. Once my students have mastered programming using Blocky, then they will be ready to move into Javascript, or other higher computer code, and experience writing their own lines of codes and more advanced computer science concepts.
