My 5th grade students, although very bright and eager to learn, unfortunately must overcome challenges that, at times, makes learning in our classroom difficult. One hundred percent of my students qualify for the free lunch program and 50% of the students come from single-family homes. Fifteen percent of the students are English Language Learners and 15% are considered to have designated learning challenges. The students in my classroom come with the potential to be prepared for college and careers that lie ahead. They are considerate and thoughtful to one another and demonstrate the utmost respect to all those around. They also have high energy and are open-minded to learning. The elementary school these students attend has a population of 298 students. It is considered a high-performing school in a low-performing area. What makes this school not a typical low-performing inner-city school is the perseverance of the staff and its ability to raise and sustain test scores.
