My students are funny and strong willed. They vary greatly in their strengths as students and in their interests as people. I have emerging athletes, My Little Pony fanatics, talented cartoon artists, and voracious readers. My students come from South Philly where our public neighborhood school is located, and most of them are African American or Black, as is typical for our school. Too many of my students face challenges I wish they didn't have to face as seven and eight year old children, but it would be wrong of me to bring up those challenges without also mentioning that the community and familial support I see surrounding them each day astounds me. I am fortunate to be welcomed as a teacher by my wonderful students and community.
