Remember back to your first day of school. The butterflies you felt going to a new place where you didn’t know everybody. Now imagine having to attend a new school in a new country where you know little to no English. These are the students I teach. I teach in an urban school district in Scranton, PA. My school has a very high poverty rate of more than 80%. My students range in ages from ages 14-20. They are from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Cape Verde, The Congo, Nepal, India, Russia, Turkey, Iraq and more. Many of my students have come here from refugee camps in other countries. They have come to the United States with very little in possessions, but are driven to succeed in their education.
