Our students are a diverse group of outstanding seventh graders consisting of special education and regular education children blended together. They are enthusiastic and eager to learn. They enjoy reading books about children their own age, especially when they are reading about obstacles that the characters face and overcome. Our school is a middle level 7th and 8th grade building of 1,300 students. Over 50% of our student population is impoverished. Due to circumstances beyond our district's control, our school district is currently paying a 224 million dollar court-ordered tax settlement to a power company, which has led to years of budget cuts. There has been a 25% reduction of personnel and programs in our district over the last nine years. We are trying to meet the needs of our students despite of our district's challenges.
