Most of instruction time at our school is done in a small group setting, where I am able to differentiate lessons based on what my students need the most. My students enjoy every time I call their group back to my table for our small group time. A kidney shaped table would make it easier for my students to collaborate with me and their peers while exploring various math concepts. The current table that I use for small group does not lend itself for small group instruction. The table is oddly shaped and I am unable to work 1:1 or monitor the whole small group effectively. I found that the child sitting across from me is just too far away. I often have difficulty seeing what work the student is doing and actually have to stand up and loom over them. With the new kidney table, every child will be close to me. I will non-threateningly be able to monitor and/or assess all the students' work with no problem. Also, my current table fits 4 chairs comfortably and my groups are much larger 5-6 students. A new kidney table will allow more room for ALL of the students in the group to fit comfortably and work more efficiently. The new table also has a really, awesome feature: a whiteboard top! We use whiteboards during math every day, and we struggle to fit our notebooks, our books, and our whiteboards on the table at the same time. Without the need for whiteboards, students will be able to more seamlessly solve math problems and show me their thinking. I’d greatly appreciate your help!
