I teach a self-contained class in a high poverty neighborhood in East New York, Brooklyn. The students in my class are all classified with disabilities that interfere with their learning. These disabilities include significant cognitive delays, ADHD, learning disabilities, and/or emotional disturbances. The students are eager to learn, but easily become frustrated due to their educational and emotional needs. More than half of the students are reading 3 grades below their grade level which causes a lot of anger and frustration to build up. The students will lose focus, shut down and not complete tasks unless they are given time to calm down. Therefore, I started teaching the students stretches to calm them down which quickly turned into daily movement breaks. The students love participating in the stretching because they notice how it has helped them regulate themselves, which lead them to being more engaged during class. Also, they noticed they were focused and ready to learn.
