I would like the opportunity to provide flexible seating options for the children in my classroom. This means that the students will have a choice in seating that includes wobble chairs. Research shows these types of chairs help students' physical movement, which increases cognitive development and improves classroom behavior. Flexible classrooms (with wobble chairs, cushions, bean bags, scoop, and balance balls) give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and they help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. Since it is unrealistic to expect students with lots of energy to stay on task sitting at the same table with the same chair all year long, I will strive to provide a variety of seating options as well as giving students a choice. In traditional chairs, students who need to get their wiggles out cannot do so, not without sitting in the chair in an incorrect or dangerous way. Some students are not able to sit correctly because they have so much energy and/or special needs that prevent them focusing on their task. It is no secret that movement increases brain function. Changing seating options will allow students to move more freely according to their bodies’ needs. These stability balls and wobble chairs will help them get their energy out in a safe way and help them focus better on the learning at hand. This type of seating also has the added benefit of helping students to build endurance with their muscles and help with sensory processes. I have already purchased scoop chairs, saucer chairs, and ottomans for our free choice work. I am now hoping to add two different types of wobble chairs for my students that still need to whirl, wobble, and work.
