Basketball provides a sense of security for my students. Every time they walk into the gym, I make sure they feel welcomed and taken care of. Many of our students do not have that feeling at home and in their neighborhoods. Many of them are currently playing basketball in worn out shoes with holes in them. Some of them are wearing shoes of their siblings and parents because they can not afford basketball shoes for the season. Something as simple as a pair of shoes to play basketball in can do wonders, by increasing confidence, feeling included and part of the team, as well as help in the prevention of injuries.
