I teach in an impoverished area in the Burnside community in Chicago. 98% of our student population receive free and reduced price lunch. In addition to being classified as a community that is economically challenged. This community is also noted as one of the most violent neighborhoods in Chicago. There are limited resources and programs for our students outside of the school. It is heartbreaking to see children struggling to read and not having access to basic resources. Many may suggest students can go the library to access books, magazines, and videos. However, the library in our area where violent crime is on the raise. Our parents have voiced numerous times their concerns of the safety of their children walking to and from the library. As a result, I spend many hours preparing weekly packets of books and activities to reinforce reading strategies and encourage students to read.
