My students are a highly diverse group. We are a Title I and ELL Magnet Elementary School. My first graders come from a half day K program. Many of our ELL's do not have the benefit of a 3 and 4 year old preschool experience. Therefore, their half day K experience has been their only exposure to school. They spend most of their year becoming acclimated to what the school climate is and how to properly behave within the school setting. This puts these students at a significant deficit in regards to their academics. Having no prior schooling and limited experience with the English language presents numerous challenges. Many of my students speak more English than their parents do, so the academic support at home is also limited. As a first grade teacher I teach pre-school, kindergarten, first and sometimes second grade level students within one classroom.
