North High School is a high needs school with 85% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. The population consists of 90% students of color, 27% students with special needs, and all the students with whom I work have significant emotional disabilities. In my affective needs classroom I create a safe, nurturing, supportive, and loving environment as I know my students are capable of reaching all their post- secondary goals, with the support afforded within that environment. My students struggle daily with emotional stressors that no child should ever have to face, and yet they come to my classroom every day. They work hard to meet the high expectations we have set for ourselves, and they have made exceptional progress! During this school year, we have been working on the importance of understanding their anger management cycles, so as to become as consistent as possible in practicing and implementing appropriate coping skills.
