My students are a part of a very small rural farming community. Some students still have little access to computers outside of school. My students have a hunger for knowledge and are eager to learn but get little exposure to any life sciences before high school. They love looking at preserved specimens and dissecting animals. Even at the adolescent age they still are mesmerized by germinating peas and microscopic animals. My students want exposure to the natural world, but living in the Midwest with limited field trip opportunities doesn't let them see real world applications of biology. My students often question the usefulness of higher education, since they can't see how biology, geometry, or art are applied in the real world. I believe that most of the students want to go to college, but are unsure of what they can do with a degree. I hope to change that misconception with engaging activities, that show real world applications that will ignite a desire to take on higher education.
