A former language learner myself, I now work as an ELL teacher in a small urban school in Burlington, Vermont, where 49.7% of students receive free and reduced lunch assistance. My students are mostly second graders, with diverse cultural backgrounds, and at various literacy and English proficiency levels. Some of the ELLs are newly arrived refugees with either interrupted or no previous schooling and illiterate in their first language. These are the students who need "visual" support the most. With my daily support in language and literacy, along with the use of high-quality instructional tools for learning and practicing English skills, these students will acquire and produce the language they need to survive socially and succeed academically in and outside of school. That is where iPads come in handy. Speaking to an iPad is less stressful than speaking in front of a whole class. When using iPads for writing and speaking projects, my students do produce more language.
