My K-5 school serves a high poverty population living in a rural area. We have 80-90% of our students on free or reduced lunch. Many of them come from homes with parents working more than one job or night shift, limiting family time, therefore limiting opportunity for practicing communication skills. My 4th grade students want to learn, they want to please, they want to be friends. But their lack of communication skills often hinders them from accomplishing these goals.
