Teaching during distance learning is a challenge for every teacher. However, teaching in a school district crippled by budget cuts without adequate technology has been extremely difficult. Teaching virtually on a single Chromebook means that I cannot be on camera while I’m sharing my screen. It means grading, taking attendance, emailing and other administrative tasks take longer as I wait for each page to slowly load. Having an iPad would be revolutionary to my distance learning teaching practice. As a teacher, I am competing with many different learning environments. Some of my students live in a home free from distraction while live class in in session. For many others, that’s not the case. There are myriad apps that will help me to make my class more engaging for my students so I can compete with distracting home environments. “Stage” will allow me to write and draw on live video. Kahoot, Quizlet, PearDeck, JamBoard, Padlet, Flipgrid, all of the various apps and platforms I already utilize will be so much better with a second screen! That way I can keep my Zoom chat up while administering the activity. 100 emails a day will be faster to manage with an iPad. Taking attendance will be so much faster and easier with an iPad. Perhaps the biggest timesaver will be grading. I love Google Classroom, but switching between student’s assignments while I’m grading takes a long time on my poor chromebook. With all of the time I’m saving grading with a faster piece of tech, I will be able to have more time to plan more engaging virtual lessons. Having an iPad would allow me to be a better teacher. It will help engage my students, many of whom are dealing with less than ideal learning environments at home. Thanks!
