I use beakers, flasks, and graduated cylinders throughout our units on density, volume, mass, phase changes of matter, waves, chemical/physical reactions, radiometric dating, convection and water properties etc. Right now the beakers, cylinders and flasks we have are either too small for our needs, in really bad condition, or we don’t have enough for students to work with in small groups. We also have nothing at this time for the units on waves or sound which is why the tuning forks and resonance boxes are needed. What I love about the materials the most is that if school ever has to go back to virtual learning due to COVID or other circumstances, I’ll be equipped with the proper materials to make high quality videos demonstrating concepts they aren’t able to replicate at home. The materials I am asking for are big enough in size for the measurements to be seen clearly on a video. The students will also be able to see the methods needed to complete the labs clearly. The tuning forks will allow for students to hear how waves travel, how they change as they move through different mediums, and how this energy is transferred or changed into other types of energy. If students are at school this will allow for our students to actually do hands-on experiments in class while in small groups in a more safe and controlled environment. Whether we are learning how to find the density of different objects in Physics, Earth Science and 8th grade science to learn scientific laws, understand how theories of mantle convection currents work or learning how matter changes states as thermal energy is added or removed, these tools will remain a central part of science labs in my classroom for years to come.
