My students are 7th and 8th grade girls and boys. The majority of students (2000) who attend our public middle school spend at least one semester in a general art class. Some elect to take art every semester. They are of mixed ethnicity and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some are English language learners and some have learning disabilities. Importantly, all are at one of life's challenging junctures--moving from childhood to young adulthood. For many it is a turbulent and stressful time. They are desperately in need of avenues of expression for their ideas and feelings. They produce thought-provoking, honest, expressive objects. My students are inspired, creative, generous young people capable of making great leaps if provided the where-with-all to learn, to grow, to communicate.
