I teach at a school that is 91% free and reduced price lunch. I have 28 students. Only 3 of my students are Native English speakers. Most of my students are from Eastern Africa, a majority of them are Somalian. Many of my students have been in the country for less than two years. A couple only a few months. They come from refugee camps that are over crowed and lack necessities to thrive before coming to America. Almost all of them start off in a homeless shelter when arriving to the country. Their parents know little to no English when they first arrive. While adjusting to American schools is very challenging for some students others thrive and excel beyond their grade level. In the past I have taught special education for primary grades. This is my first year as a regular education first grade teacher, which is why the upper end of my leveled library is so slim. I have a third of my students that are picking up the pace in reading and I need the resources to meet their needs!
