I teach in a predominantly Mexican neighborhood in Chicago where most students are first-generation students from large, low-income families. My students have so much knowledge and ideas that they bring into the classroom. Since many of their parents are street vendors, the children are very knowledgeable about money and the value of hard work. Unfortunately, they are also aware of their families' financial hardships and know the impact that it has on their daily living. Most students in the classroom fail to bring all of the required school supplies and some wear the same uniform everyday. Despite these challenges, they attend school on a regular basis because they come from families that instill the value education.
