Many of my students are on free and reduced lunch. Some live in notoriously violent neighborhoods. They all have parents that chose to enroll them at our public charter; however, these parents can still be unsupportive and even counter productive. All of them are good kids with great potential. They grow so much in the seven years we have them. They are inexperienced: most have never been on a plane, some have never been to the ocean (we live 30 minutes from it), they have not been given a chance to appreciate nature. When you show them something amazing, their eyes light up.
