Having a class set of Kindle Fire tablets will allow for struggling readers to access all class texts in my classroom. One way they will be used is by downloading ebooks with accompanying audio books on each individual tablet. Students who normally require a teacher to read the text aloud for them will be able to listen to the audio book at their own pace and look up unfamiliar vocabulary while still being able to participate in the discussion and learning activities with their peers.
The Kindle Fire tablets will allow struggling readers to experience the joy of literature without the defeat of trying to tackle multisyllabic words and unfamiliar vocabulary. Many of my struggling readers attend a literacy intervention course in addition to their high school English course. This technology is the perfect support to supplement their literacy learning without compromising their ability to experience the books that their peers are reading.
My project will make a difference because struggling readers will no longer feel ostracized because of their inability to access the same learning materials as their peers. Our classrooms are not yet at the level technologically to meet their needs as learners and this grant will help to close that gap just a little bit more.
