My students have a difficult time with reading Shakespeare, so I start with teaching Elizabethan English. We progress to sonnet study, including the writing of sonnets using Elizabethan English. Later, after the students have read Romeo and Juliet, they complete a motif project. This project requires students to analyze a motif, locate supporting quotes and analyze how the quotes and motif illustrate one of the play’s themes. Since my students have expressed a desire to learn cursive or calligraphy, I have decided to work that skill into the final sonnet and motif deliverables. ELA 9.1
