My students are all girls, and they are today's typical American teens -- new American teens. They come from, (among other places), Pakistan, the Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, Yemen, Puerto Rico, Uzbekistan, and Russia, and they've all found their way to us in Brooklyn, New York. Many were well educated in their native countries, but some are in formal school settings for the first time. Most want to go to college, and almost all will be the first in their families to do so. They are chatty, intellectually curious, and friendly. Some are shy, and some have already picked up a lot of American attitude. Although most have traveled many miles to get here, their experiences of the outside world are often limited. It's one of the reasons they are fascinated by the science of our Earth. It's a much bigger world in which tectonic plates shift under our feet, there's a Grand Canyon under the Hudson River, and streams shape the landscape even more than reality television.
