My students are amazing learners and strong survivors! They come ready to learn and push themselves, despite their obstacles, to succeed. Most of my students come from difficult backgrounds; such as immigrants, foster homes, or living with another relative after being bounced around different family members. Our school is a Title I school. We have an extremely high percentage of free and reduced lunches. As a school, we believe in Kids At Hope. (As opposed to kids at risk.) They can be described a kids who are at a disadvantage due to financial (and other) difficulties, but have the ability and drive to succeed. Most of my students do not have a person at home to support them with learning English, so a majority of the exposure comes from school. These kids sometimes need a strong adult presence of someone who loves them and school is often a place where some of these students can find that person.
