Imagine 5th graders designing hydro powered boats to answer the energy crisis and climate change, researching brain waves and how to train their brain, questioning why some people break laws while others don't, learning about indigenous peoples and the history that impacts them, exploring farming and labor practices that support instead exploit our resources, and looking to the bottom of the deepest ocean trenches to discover new life. Imagine budding readers and writers sitting together focused on a common goal, one of growth and achievement. Amazing texts being read and discussed is a way of life in my classroom. Wonderful ideas are being grown daily in notebooks and through keyboards as writers' ideas take flight. Now you have imagined what 5th grade can and should be like.
