I am a speech language therapist in a K-5 school for children with severe Autism Spectrum Disorder. The classroom sizes are 6 students to 1 classroom teacher with the support of 1-2 paraprofessionals. My students struggle with most forms of socializing, and especially with basic verbal communication. Some are totally nonverbal, and all present with moderate to severe social skill delays. Many students use pictures and other devices or created materials in order to communicate their desires and needs. They need to be taught the most basic skills such as greeting each other, waving to friends and adults, and saying "yes" or "no." My students learn best through constant repetition, and all struggle to generalize their skills once they've learned them. Progress is sometimes slow, but it's extremely satisfying to watch my kids learn and grow.
