DA Hulcy STEAM Middle School is a public choice school in DISD that aims to transform "learners into leaders." We have a strong focus on a project-based curriculum. As well, as the name indicates, we support a mix of critical thinking in science, technology, engineering and math, along with a study of the arts. Students from around Dallas apply for placement at Hulcy. A lottery system is used to select students. Hulcy opened just two years ago for sixth graders only. Last year we added seventh grade. And for the 2017-2018 school year, I will be teaching RLA to the first class of eighth graders. Since we're building our school from scratch, we don't have rooms or shelves full of books, like we find at some schools. In fact, in my classroom there aren't any books available for students to read on their own -- a fixture in most classes now. I've bought some books, but have a long way to go.
