I work with diverse students who have a range of interests, whose families speak many languages, and who come from a variety of backgrounds. They all hope to achieve independence and lead happy and productive adult lives. Many of my students receive free and reduced price lunch and speak a language other than English at home. In addition, all of the students in my class have moderate to severe special needs. In order to help them successfully make and keep friends and follow schedules, they need access to high quality picture schedules, curriculum, and picture-based communication systems. For students who are still learning basic literacy skills for the workplace and for functional life skills, having meaningful, individualized, picture support is essential. Imagine if you were traveling in a foreign country and how much you would rely on pictures if you didn't know the language, and you will have an idea of how essential this resource is for our class.
