My students are smart. bright, intelligent individuals, each with a special gift to share. They have a thirst for knowledge about the African American experiences in history however, our school does not have the resources to provide them with meaningful learning opportunities. They come to live when I teach them how heroes of the past have overcome adversity and they can apply skills learned from literature to their every day life. They come to school each day struggling with unfair circumstances that have occurred in their lives: poverty, gangs, lack of food, etc.. Our school is a safe haven for many in the community. We give them a loving environment in which to learn so that they can achieve academic success. My children have taught me more than I could ever teach them. They have overcome many obstacles in life. However, the truth is they are losing hope and they need to be excited about school They have helped in the planning of this curriculum and are eagerly waiting to learn!
